Vision Statement of the Antelope Valley Women's Conference 2007, in Association with the Gaia Foundation, Inc.

The goal of the AV Women’s Conference is to celebrate, ignite and invigorate the women in the Antelope Valley. Highlighting resources and sharing information in all areas of interest to women, the conference promises to transform horizons, focus on opportunities and look beyond the ordinary.

The Gaia Foundation 2007 Woman of Inspiration Award
Honoree:
Linda Pluss

Linda PlussBoundless passion.   These are the two words that brought the name Linda Pluss to the attention of Antelope Valley Women’s Conference organizers.

Scout leader, gourmet cook, minor poet, bicyclist, bound-buttonhole-making seamstress, elementary teacher and senior ‘fitness instructor’ are but a few of the self-descriptions Linda Pluss accords herself.  But regardless of the activity labels on her resume, this local senior citizen brings enthusiasm to all she undertakes.  And more, she inspires all she meets.

Whether teaching pre-schoolers or encouraging seniors, Pluss imparts a philosophy that learning is a never-ending joy and that the real challenge is motivating students, young and old, to want to learn.  That spirit of generosity will be acknowledged by the AV Women’s Conference on May 17, 2007.

The conference award will not be her first.  Ms. Pluss was named the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “Woman of the Year” in 1985.  For the academic year, 1997-98, the Palmdale School District named her “Teacher of the Year”.    And in 1999, she won the Mesquite PTA Continuing Service Award.

Her community service is also a resplendent resume.  She’s a past President and Board member of the AV Domestic Violence Council.  She served as an Organizer, President and Ways & Means Chair for Valley Oasis Amigas.  She Chaired or Co-Chaired events for the Assistance League, Alpha Charter Guild, American Association of University Women and Phi Delta Kappa (honorary teacher’s society).  And she served as the Palmdale representative for the Antelope Valley Trails and Recreation Society.

As a young adult, Ms. Pluss set four seemingly impossible goals for herself.  Cross the Mississippi, hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, see the top of Mt. Whitney and ride a bicycle across the United States.  Having attained all these goals, Ms. Pluss laments that she didn’t set her sights a little higher.  Today, she encourages others to set goals and set them high.  “The one thing I have learned in life is that you do whatever you set as a goal for yourself.”
